Velle Dental Sedation

A Comprehensive, Root-Cause Approach to Your Health

At our office, we understand that jaw pain, poor sleep, and breathing issues are often deeply connected. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, Dr. Tonnis takes a comprehensive approach that looks at the entire system—TMJ, airway, and sleep—working together.

Her goal is simple: identify the root cause of your symptoms and create a clear, personalized path to lasting relief.

Why Patients Seek This Care

You may benefit from a TMJ and airway evaluation if you experience:

  • Jaw pain, clicking, or tension
  • Chronic headaches or migraines
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Snoring or disrupted sleep
  • Waking up tired or fatigued
  • Mouth breathing or dry mouth
  • Ear symptoms like fullness, ringing, or dizziness

These symptoms are often connected—and treating them together leads to better outcomes.

Our Comprehensive Evaluation

Every patient begins with a detailed assessment designed to understand how your body is functioning as a whole.

This will include:

  • Posture analysis
  • TMJ and muscle evaluation
  • Airway and breathing assessment
  • Sleep screening
  • Bite and tooth wear analysis
  • Advanced imaging when needed
  • Motor nerve reflex testing and cranial nerve exam

This allows us to move beyond guesswork and design a treatment plan tailored specifically to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a dentist really treat sleep apnea?

Yes. Dentists trained in airway therapy can design and fit custom oral appliances that gently reposition the jaw during sleep to keep the airway open. For patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea, or patients who cannot tolerate CPAP, oral appliance therapy is a well-established and effective alternative. We provide this treatment in-house at Velle Dental.

Is snoring something I should actually be concerned about?

Occasional snoring is common and often harmless. Consistent, loud snoring, especially paired with gasping, restless sleep, or daytime fatigue, can be a sign that your airway is partially obstructing during sleep. We can screen for airway concerns as part of your regular visit and refer for a sleep study if needed.

What is an oral appliance and how does it work?

An oral appliance looks similar to a nightguard but is designed to hold your lower jaw in a slightly forward position while you sleep. This prevents the soft tissue in your throat from collapsing and blocking airflow. Ours are custom-fitted using digital scans for maximum comfort and effectiveness.

What if I already have a CPAP but hate using it?

You are not alone. CPAP compliance is one of the biggest challenges in sleep medicine. Oral appliance therapy is a legitimate, physician-recognized alternative for eligible patients. We can work with your physician to determine whether an appliance is appropriate for your diagnosis and get you into something you will actually use.

How do I know if my child has an airway issue?

Mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, difficulty focusing, and behavioral changes can all be early signs of airway issues in children. Early evaluation matters because the airway develops alongside the jaw and face. If you are noticing any of these signs, bring it up at your next visit and we will take a closer look.
