WHAT ARE DENTURES?

Dentures are natural-looking, removable replacement teeth. There are two types of dentures: full and partial.

  • Full dentures are for patients who have had all of their natural teeth removed. Conventional full dentures are placed after the gum tissue has healed, which can take several months. Immediate full dentures are placed directly after all teeth have been removed and may require frequent adjustments during the first couple of months.
  • Partial dentures are used to fill in where permanent teeth are missing or have been removed. They are attached to a metal frame that is connected to the remaining natural teeth and are considered a removable alternative to a bridge.

CARING FOR YOUR DENTURES

Just like natural teeth, dentures require daily maintenance to stay clean and keep bacteria from growing inside of your mouth.

Tips for keeping your dentures clean and your smile healthy:

  • When handling your dentures, stand over a clean, folded towel or a sink full of water to prevent them from breaking if you accidentally drop them.
  • Brush your dentures every day to keep plaque and tartar buildup at bay. Use a soft-bristled brush and gently brush the surfaces of the dentures, being careful not to break or bend the plastic. It is also important to rinse your dentures after each meal.
  • Use a gentle cleanser to clean your dentures. Many toothpastes, household cleaners, and mouthwashes are too harsh for your dentures, so we recommend using a mild hand or dish soap to get your dentures clean. Always check for the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval when looking for products that are denture safe. You can also your dentist about which products work the best.
  • When you’re not wearing your dentures, keep them moist. Dentures will dry out if they are not kept in water or a denture cleaning solution. They may also lose their shape or even crack and break. Some styles of dentures require a particular soaking solution, so please ask your dentist which solution is right for your dentures.
  • It is still important to clean your gums and tongue when you have a full set of dentures. Use a soft-bristled brush to gently clean your gums and tongue every day.
  • Continue scheduling regular dental checkups every six months to keep your mouth healthy and your smile beautiful.
  • If your dentures do break, please contact us and schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Broken dentures that don’t fit properly can irritate your gums and mouth.
